What Is Cruise Control & When Should You Use It?

Cruise Control

The cruise control system was invented in 1948 by the American engineer Ralph Teetor. The idea came to Teetor while riding as a passenger in his lawyer's car. During the trip, he noticed his lawyer kept speeding up and slowing down every time he spoke, which Teetor saw a need for consistent speed control in vehicles. However, society didn't revolutionize the modern system until the 90s, and cruise control systems still see advancements today.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a mechanism that allows you to maintain a set speed without using the accelerator or gas pedal. Once the driver selects the speed they want to operate, they can release their foot off the accelerator, and the vehicle will drive itself at said speed. Adjustments can be made when the system is employed by clicking buttons or pulling on a lever.

Cruise control can be very advantageous in certain driving situations. The cruise control function allows drivers to operate their vehicles steadily without resting their feet on the gas pedal. When employing this feature, you have more time to concentrate on steering the car. It's also an excellent way to give your foot some rest on long drives.

When Should You Use Cruise Control?

  • On Long Road Trips. As mentioned before, it's nice to give your muscles a bit of a break when you are on the road for an extended time.
  • The Road is Straight and Level. It is highly recommended that you only use cruise control if the route you are driving on is straight and smooth. Cruise control is not intended to be used if you constantly have to make sharp turns or stop traffic.
  • There is Minimal Traffic. Cruise control lets you experience the true meaning of "cruising" on open roads. It would help if you did not employ it when many cars are surrounding your vehicle.

We hope this gives you a better understanding of what cruise control is and the appropriate times to use it. If you experience any complications with your cruise control functions or require any other auto repairs, feel free to stop by Goose Automotive!
